I am planning on having two types of MGE Behavior. Every MGE member will have access to these “Behaviors” and will be able to switch between the two styles whenever they want. Sadly, I am at a loss for terminology that I like so please bare with today's terms. They will likely change by the time I implement anything.
The first type (and the default) will have unlimited GP. I'll probably call this level the Investment Tracker level. This level will have immediate transactions and the highest amount of available open transactions. It will basically be a quick and dirty investment tool. It will also have the ability to predate / preprice transactions. You would have the ability to test out “what if” scenarios. For example lets say you purchased 1000 Strange Fruit for 700gp on January 1, 2009. You'd just enter this information into the Investment Tracker level and have immediate access to how well this investment is doing today. This level will not be publicly ranked because obviously a member wanting to be number one could simply buy a trillion blue party hats.
This first behavior type is my number one priority. It is also the type that we are currently alpha testing (though we have limits set right now for testing purposes and lacks the historical abilities). Once I am comfortable with the stability of this level I will then start work on the far more interesting and exciting second behavior type. This second type if the whole reason I made the MGE in the first place. Maybe I am biased, but this second type may become the most exciting advancement in RuneScape Fan Sites since the introduction of item databases.
The second level would have a set starting gp amount (lets say 50 million) and there will be fewer available open transactions (probably six). For the sake of this post let's just call it The Realistic Trading level. I welcome suggestions of a much cooler name. This level will be more of a competitive level and public rankings will be available.
The Realistic Trading level will have transactions that will go into effect after a set amount of time. Item transactions on the 50 most traded list (all publicly available on the RuneScape website) will go into effect within an hour (randomly chosen). Most other transactions will go into effect in a random amount of time within 24 hours. Items on the Rares Runedex (or valued over 100 million) will go into effect within one hour to seven days (again randomly chosen). I am debating if the investor will be told in advanced when the transactions will go through. In the real RuneScape you can never be certain, so I think this level should honor that realistic aspect of game play. However, I'll probably have this level tell you at least if your transaction is considered “Most Traded”, “Standard”, or “Rare.”
The Realistic Trading level will have some other interesting aspects. The most obvious being that when the transaction goes into effect the cost per item may have changed from the time the transaction was initiated.
For purchases, if an item's cost has increased from when the transaction was initiated, only the amount of that item that can be afforded by the initial buy offer will be purchased. Any left over GP will be returned to the user bank account. If an item's cost has decreased then surplus GP will be placed into the users bank account.
For sales, things are a little easier to follow. Whatever the price of the item at the time the sale goes through is the price that will be honored. But there will be a little added flexibility. That is also because you will be able to sell at minimum, market, or maximum prices. Market prices will follow the same time limits as mentioned above. Minimum prices will have shorter limits (half the time). Maximum prices will have longer time limits (twice the time).
Another cool feature will be transaction thresholds. Any items in your portfolio can be set to start a sell transaction when the market price has reached a certain minimum or maximum level. Using the Strange Fruit example from above you could set the open transaction to go into a sale transaction if the price reaches 5200 gp or drops to 500gp. Buying items will work in a similar way. You'll be able to setup a watch list that will start a buy transaction if an item hits a certain price (and you have an available open transaction spot).
As you can tell the MGE has some exciting features in store for the future. Right now the priority is to get it to function as a stable investment tracking tool. Once that goal has been reached we'll start work on advancing it into a game in its own right.
