Runedexes are similar to Wall Street Indexes in that they lump many items together in to categories and provide a numerical snapshot of how that category is performing within the world of Runescape. There are two main focal points to a Runedex. The Average Change and the Value Change and these names are fairly self explanatory.

The average change is the average percentage daily change in the value of the items in the index. This provides the clearest snapshot of how the category is performing as a whole and is not dramatically influenced by the individual value of specific items. Many Runedexes have items that range from just a few gp to millions of gp. A traditional index would fail miserably in accurately portraying performance within such extremes because an incredibly small percentage change in an incredibly high value item would dramatically effect the overall value of the entire index. Therefore average percentage change puts all items on an equal ground. The value change of a Runedex is the actual gp value of the index as it changes from day to day and is subject to weighing heavily in favor of high value items. The value change is mainly listed for curiosity purposes.

What is RuneScape? RuneScape is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) created by Andrew Gower and operated by Jagex Ltd. Like other MMORPGs, RuneScape is a computer generated role-playing games that allows huge numbers of players to meet and interact in a virtual fantasy world. Other well known MMORPGs include World of Warcraft and more loosely, SecondLife. RuneScape uses the medieval theme of Dungeons and Dragons. Here players can fight computer generated monsters such as demons, giants, and dragons or players can fight other players in limited combat games or anywhere in the RuneScape landscape on special player vs player worlds. In addition to combat, players can train various skills such as cooking, fishing and crafting. Players may also take part in special quests, mini games, or other community activities. Finally, for the more financially minded people, players can attempt to become rich within the virtual world by studying and investing in the RuneScape economy which is influenced by millions of player transactions every day.
