The Christmas Cracker is likely the rarest of all RuneScape items, though there is no real way to confirm this concept. Released at Christmas time in 2001, it was simply a holiday drop that inadvertently created a market structure that continues even a decade later.
Christmas crackers are a common holiday item in the UK and many of her former territories. A cracker is basically a brightly colored tube that contains a small prize or gift. Two people, usually at holiday dinner, will grab hold of each end of the cracker and pull, similar to the US tradition of pulling on a turkey wishbone on Thanksgiving. As the cracker is pulled a bang or pop is created and the prize is revealed. Typically the prize is a paper hat or other small trinket.
The RuneScape version rewards both players who pulled on the cracker. One player would receive a random RuneScape item, and the other person would receive one of six random Party Hats.
At the time, Party Hats were valueless, providing no real advantage in the game. Thus many players simply discarded the hats. Jagex left the item as tradeable even after discontinuing the item, inadvertently creating an item with no supply. Players caught on and the laws of supply and demand, making the cracker and its six party hats the most valuable items in the RuneScape economy.
The Christmas Cracker is incredibly rare and almost never traded on the Grand Exchange. Even though this item is below the theoretical programming language limit for trades in the GE, the cracker is usually traded privately for values well beyond anything the GE can give for prices. It is so rare that it is believed the Christmas Cracker may become extinct sometime in the future, but its remaining numbers haven't been confirmed so there is no way of knowing how long it will continue to exist in the game.

WHAT IS RUNESCAPE? RuneScape is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) created by Andrew Gower and operated by Jagex Ltd. Like other MMORPGs, RuneScape is a computer generated role-playing games that allows huge numbers of players to meet and interact in a virtual fantasy world. Other well known MMORPGs include World of Warcraft and more loosely, SecondLife. RuneScape uses the medieval theme of Dungeons and Dragons. Here players can fight computer generated monsters such as demons, giants, and dragons or players can fight other players in limited combat games or anywhere in the RuneScape landscape on special player vs player worlds. In addition to combat, players can train various skills such as cooking, fishing and crafting. Players may also take part in special quests, mini games, or other community activities. Finally, for the more financially minded people, players can attempt to become rich within the virtual world by studying and investing in the RuneScape economy which is influenced by millions of player transactions every day.
