Like all other wearable discontinued items in the world of RuneScape, the Santa Hat has huge demand as a status symbol and is very expensive. Released in 2002, before Jagex figured out that discontinuing tradeable items has a huge impact on the economy, the Santa hat would appear randomly and players could pick up as many as they desired. The Santa Hat is one of the most watched rare items due to its much more active pricing fluctuations. Wealthy players can often be seen sporting this hat, especially for obvious reasons, around Christmas time.
Because of its moderately high value, this hat along with other rare discontinued items, are used to hold player wealth if that player nears a programming language restriction that prevents a players cash reserves going slightly over 2 billion GP. It can also be used as a stage in acquiring other more valuable items such as the blue Party Hat., which has exceeded the limit on the ability to obtain the item through a direct GP transaction.
Other Santa hats can be seen on NPCs (non-player characters) in various story lines and holiday events can be seen wearing similar but smaller Santa Hats.

WHAT IS RUNESCAPE? RuneScape is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) created by Andrew Gower and operated by Jagex Ltd. Like other MMORPGs, RuneScape is a computer generated role-playing games that allows huge numbers of players to meet and interact in a virtual fantasy world. Other well known MMORPGs include World of Warcraft and more loosely, SecondLife. RuneScape uses the medieval theme of Dungeons and Dragons. Here players can fight computer generated monsters such as demons, giants, and dragons or players can fight other players in limited combat games or anywhere in the RuneScape landscape on special player vs player worlds. In addition to combat, players can train various skills such as cooking, fishing and crafting. Players may also take part in special quests, mini games, or other community activities. Finally, for the more financially minded people, players can attempt to become rich within the virtual world by studying and investing in the RuneScape economy which is influenced by millions of player transactions every day.
